At Silva's Dog House, our primary goal is to foster a safe, happy, and reliable relationship between dogs and their owners. Training tools are selected based on their effectiveness in achieving this goal, always prioritizing the dog’s understanding and well-being.

E-Collars

E-collars (E-Collar Technologies Educator Series) are one of the most misunderstood tools in dog training. While often referred to as “shock collars,” modern e-collar training is not based on fear or punishment—it is based on clear, consistent communication.

When used correctly, an e-collar is one of the safest and most reliable tools for off-leash communication, distance control, and real-world reliability.

Clear Communication

Dogs learn best when communication is immediate and consistent.

The e-collar allows for precise feedback the moment a behavior happens—whether reinforcing a known command, guiding a behavior, or interrupting something unsafe. This clarity removes confusion and helps the dog understand exactly what is being communicated.

Unlike raised voices or inconsistent leash corrections, the e-collar provides neutral, repeatable communication that the dog can clearly interpret.

Safety and Off-Leash Reliability

Reliable recall is not optional in many environments—it is a safety requirement.

Whether a dog is chasing wildlife, running toward traffic, or ignoring commands under heavy distraction, the e-collar allows communication at a distance when a leash is not physically possible.

This creates more freedom for the dog while maintaining structure and safety for the owner.

Low-Level Modern Training

Modern e-collar training is not based on high intensity or harsh correction.

Each dog is introduced to a personal working level, which is typically a very light sensation—often compared to a tap or point of attention rather than anything painful or intimidating.

The e-collar is never introduced before a dog understands the command on leash first. It is layered onto known behavior, not used to teach it.

Responsible Use

Like all training tools, the e-collar depends on proper application.

The goal is always the lowest effective level that the dog clearly understands, paired with timing and consistency.

Owners are fully educated on proper use before handling the tool independently to ensure communication remains fair, clear, and effective.

At Silva’s Dog House, safety and well-being extend far beyond basic supervision. Every boarding and training dog wears a Tractive GPS Dog Tracker during their stay to provide an added layer of security, monitoring, and peace of mind.

While many people think of GPS trackers only for location purposes, modern tracking technology also allows us to monitor important wellness information in real time.

Real-Time Location Tracking

Dogs are active, curious animals, and safety is always our top priority.

The Tractive GPS allows us to monitor a dog’s location at all times during outdoor activities, training sessions, walks, and structured exercise. In the extremely unlikely event that a dog were ever to slip a collar, back out of equipment, or otherwise become loose, location tracking provides an immediate way to locate and recover the dog quickly and safely.

This added layer of security allows dogs to safely enjoy more freedom while giving owners additional peace of mind during their stay.

Wellness & Health Monitoring

In addition to GPS tracking, the Tractive system also monitors important wellness data including:

Sleep patterns
Activity levels
Respiratory rate
Heart rate

Monitoring these metrics helps us keep a close eye on each dog’s overall well-being throughout their stay.

Changes in sleep, activity, or resting patterns can often provide early insight into stress, discomfort, fatigue, or changes in a dog’s condition. By tracking these trends, we are able to better tailor care, rest, exercise, and monitoring to each individual dog.

Boarding and training environments can be a major transition for some dogs, especially during their first stay away from home.

Using GPS and wellness monitoring allows us to maintain an additional level of awareness and accountability while helping ensure every dog remains safe, comfortable, and properly cared for throughout their time with us.

The Tractive GPS is lightweight, secure, and designed specifically for everyday canine wear.

Dogs are gradually acclimated to wearing the device comfortably as part of their regular collar setup. The tracker does not interfere with daily activities, play, training, rest, or normal movement.

Like every tool we use, the purpose is never unnecessary management — it is to improve safety, communication, and overall quality of care for the dogs entrusted to us.

Slip Leads

The slip lead (Rader K9 slip lead) is one of the simplest and most effective tools for safe handling, clear communication, and foundational leash training.

When used correctly, it provides immediate feedback, reliable control, and a high level of safety during training, transitions, and real-world handling.

Safety and Secure Handling

One of the main benefits of the slip lead is its reliability in preventing escapes.

Unlike standard buckle collars that can be backed out of, the slip lead tightens when pressure is applied, helping ensure the dog remains safely secured.

This makes it especially useful for fearful, excitable, or unpredictable dogs where safety and control are the priority.

In higher-distraction or emergency situations, it also allows for quick and efficient handling without physical struggle or delay.

Clear and Immediate Communication

The slip lead works through a simple pressure-and-release system.

When the dog pulls, light pressure is applied. When the dog returns to a neutral position, pressure is released immediately.

This clear feedback helps the dog understand how to stay calm and connected without confusion or constant correction.

When placed high on the neck, just behind the ears, it also provides better directional control and focus during handling.

Foundational Training Tool

The slip lead is primarily used as a short-term training and handling tool.

It is not designed for constant tension or long-term restraint. The goal is always a loose, relaxed leash, with pressure used only as communication when needed.

It is commonly used during early training, transitions, and structured handling situations where clarity and control are important.

Responsible Use

Like all training tools, effectiveness depends on correct use.

Proper handling includes keeping the leash loose unless communication is needed, using calm pressure-and-release timing, and avoiding constant tension or dragging.

All clients are taught proper use to ensure the slip lead remains a clear communication tool, not a restraint device.

Prong Collars

Among the tools used for teaching reliable on-leash manners, the prong collar (Herm Sprenger training collar) is an important part of the foundation for many dogs.

When used correctly and properly fitted, it provides clear communication, improves safety on walks, and helps dogs understand leash pressure in a consistent and predictable way.

Safer Leash Communication

A common misconception is that prong collars rely on pain or force. In reality, the design distributes pressure evenly around the neck rather than concentrating it on the trachea like a flat collar can when a dog pulls.

The prong collar was originally developed by a veterinarian as a tool designed to work with a dog’s natural anatomy and communication style. Its design is often compared to natural canine communication, where a mother dog may use a brief, controlled grip around the neck as a clear, instinctive form of feedback.

This even distribution reduces strain and helps prevent dogs from injuring themselves during lunging or heavy pulling, creating a safer walking experience for many strong or excitable dogs.
